After the Removal of Multiple Teeth
After the operation, it is normal to experience some bleeding. If bleeding occurs, place a gauze pad on the bleeding socket and apply pressure by biting down for 30 minutes. If bleeding continues, bite on a moistened black tea bag for thirty minutes as the tannic acid in the tea helps to stop the bleeding. Avoid hot liquids, exercise, and keep your head elevated if bleeding occurs. If bleeding persists, contact our office immediately. Do not remove the immediate denture unless bleeding is severe, and expect some oozing around the denture.
To reduce swelling, use ice packs on the cheek near the surgical site for the first 36 hours. Apply ice continuously while awake.
If you are experiencing mild discomfort, you can use aspirin, Tylenol, or a similar medication. Take two tablets every 3-4 hours. You can also take two to three tablets of Ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin) every 3-4 hours.
For severe pain, use the prescription provided to you. If the pain persists or worsens after 2 days, please contact our office. If you have been prescribed an antibiotic, be sure to complete the full course unless you experience an allergic reaction.
It is important to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids. If you have had multiple teeth extracted, it is essential to replace the lost blood by consuming at least six glasses of liquid on the first day.
Avoid rinsing your mouth on the first day after surgery or while there is still bleeding. After the first day, you can use a warm salt water rinse every 4 hours and after meals to remove any food particles or debris in the operated area (mix one teaspoon of salt in one cup of warm water). If you have dentures, remove them and rinse 3 to 4 times a day after seeing your dentist for adjustments.
Stick to a diet of liquids and soft foods that are easy for you to eat comfortably. As your wounds heal, you can gradually transition back to your normal diet.
It is normal to experience certain conditions after the removal of multiple teeth, as the bone needs to be shaped and smoothed before denture insertion. These conditions include:
- The area operated on will swell, reaching a maximum in two days. Swelling and discoloration around the eyes may occur. The application of a moist warm towel will help eliminate the discoloration. The towel should be applied continuously for as long as is tolerable, beginning 36 hours after surgery. (Remember: ice packs are used for the first 36 hours only).
- A sore throat may develop. The muscles of the throat are near the extraction sites. Swelling into the throat muscles can cause pain. This is normal and should subside in 2-3 days.
- If the corners of the mouth are stretched, they may dry out and crack. Your lips should be kept moist with an ointment like Vaseline. There may be a slight elevation of temperature for 24-48 hours. If your temperature continues to rise, notify our office.
